Content
This unit introduces students to foundational concepts of health and wellbeing required for engagement with tertiary study in health-related disciplines. Students explore how health is understood, defined, and influenced at individual, community, and population levels, with attention to biological, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental determinants of health.
The unit examines key health concepts and frameworks, including health promotion, prevention, equity, and sustainability, and supports students to develop an understanding of how health outcomes are shaped by social structures, lived experience, and access to resources. Students are introduced to contemporary health issues and challenges and consider how health is experienced differently across populations and contexts.
Students develop foundational academic and analytical skills relevant to health study by engaging with health-related information, data, and texts. They learn to interpret and evaluate health information, distinguish between credible and noncredible sources, and communicate informed perspectives using appropriate academic language and conventions.
Through scaffolded learning activities, the unit supports students to apply health concepts to real world scenarios, building confidence, judgement, and readiness for further undergraduate study in health and allied disciplines.
