Content
This unit develops students’ foundational mathematical and numeracy knowledge and skills required for successful engagement with tertiary study and everyday problem solving contexts. Students build confidence in using mathematics as a tool for reasoning, interpretation, and decision making across academic and practical situations.
The unit introduces key mathematical concepts, including number sense, proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking, and introductory statistics. Students develop skills in working with numbers, formulas, equations, graphs, and data, and learn to recognise patterns, relationships, and structure in mathematical contexts.
Students engage with algebraic concepts to model and solve problems, including the use of symbols, expressions, and simple equations. Foundational statistical concepts are also introduced, supporting students to interpret data, understand measures of central tendency and variability, and critically evaluate quantitative information presented in tables, graphs, and everyday texts.
Throughout the unit, emphasis is placed on mathematical thinking, problem solving, and reasoning. Students apply mathematical and numeracy skills to real world and academic scenarios, developing accuracy, judgement, and effective study practices. Scaffolded learning activities support increasing independence and readiness for further undergraduate study that requires quantitative literacy.
