Content
This unit introduces students to the foundational concepts, skills, and practices of science required for successful engagement with tertiary study in science related disciplines. Students develop an understanding of how scientific knowledge is generated, evaluated, and communicated, and how science contributes to understanding natural systems and contemporary global challenges.
The unit explores core scientific principles and concepts drawn from the physical, chemical, biological, and environmental sciences. Students examine key ideas such as matter and energy, systems and interactions, Earth and environmental processes, and the relationship between science, society, and sustainability. Emphasis is placed on understanding science as an evidence based and evolving way of knowing.
Students develop foundational scientific inquiry skills, including observation, measurement, data interpretation, and basic experimental design. They learn to interpret scientific information presented in texts, tables, graphs, and simple datasets, and to distinguish between evidence-based claims and opinion. The unit also introduces conventions of scientific communication, including appropriate terminology, data representation, and ethical academic practice.
Through scaffolded learning activities and applied examples, students apply scientific concepts and reasoning to real world contexts, such as environmental issues, health, and everyday phenomena. The unit supports the development of confidence, judgement, and academic readiness, preparing students for further undergraduate study in science and allied fields.
