Content
This unit introduces students to the foundational concepts, skills, and approaches of arts and humanities disciplines required for successful engagement with tertiary study. Students explore how knowledge is created, interpreted, and debated across fields such as history, philosophy, cultural studies, literature, and the social sciences.
The unit focuses on developing critical and reflective thinking, supporting students to analyse texts, ideas, and cultural artefacts from multiple perspectives. Students learn to identify arguments, assumptions, values, and evidence, and to consider how context, language, and power shape meaning and interpretation. Emphasis is placed on understanding diverse viewpoints and engaging respectfully with complex and contested ideas.
Students develop foundational academic literacy skills relevant to arts and humanities study, including reading and interpreting academic texts, constructing reasoned arguments, and communicating ideas clearly in written and oral forms. The unit introduces conventions of academic practice, such as referencing, academic integrity, and effective participation in discussions and collaborative learning activities.
Through scaffolded learning tasks and applied examples, students apply humanities concepts and inquiry skills to contemporary social, cultural, and ethical issues. The unit builds confidence, judgement, and independence, preparing students for further undergraduate study in arts, humanities, education, and related disciplines.
