Content
This unit introduces students to crime fiction and film, including the genre's historical contexts, conventions, and innovations. The unit will cover sub-genres such as the cosy crime mystery, film noir, Nordic noir, domestic noir, and crimate fiction. Exploring examples from the nineteenth century to today, students will consider how the genre tackles questions around justice, science, the economy, environment, and power. Students will engage creatively and critically with the development of the detective, narrative devices, construction of character and setting, and the significance of interpretation. The unit will include discussion of key case studies, including work by Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stieg Larsson, among others.
