Content

In this unit, students will be equipped to promote inclusion and equity for children and families who are experiencing vulnerability or are at risk. Through critical inquiry into contemporary theories, policies, and practices on inclusive education and diversity, students will critique various factors influencing children’s engagement and learning outcomes in early childhood contexts such as individual ability, disability, family structure, and socio-cultural backgrounds. Students will engage with legislation, the ECA Code of Ethics, and the VIT Code of Conduct to examine the challenges and issues informing inclusive practice. The unit aims to develop students’ awareness, knowledge, and skills in creating inclusive education environments. It emphasises rights-based pedagogical approaches that position teachers as change agents. The unit includes a range of focus areas including conceptualising inclusivity, social justice, children’s rights, indigenous communities, disabilities, giftedness, and social, cultural, and linguistic diversity. Communication strategies will be explored in the context of relationship building, responding to complexity and differentiation of children’s learning.
