Content
This is the first unit in the Humanities sequence within the Bachelor of Education (Primary). Throughout this unit students will develop their understanding of curriculum, teaching strategies and resources relevant to F-6 Humanities, including the discipline areas of Geography and History. This unit models experiential pedagogy, including play-based learning, games-based learning and outdoor learning. Students will learn about the theory behind these approaches as well as directly experience them in practice through seminar activities and assessment tasks. Understanding and respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples connections to Country/Place in local contexts is an important part of this unit. This includes learning how to engage ethically with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority, as well as localising and evaluating resources. Assessment Task 1 will take students out into their local areas for the purpose of deepening their understandings of the ways local First Nations communities maintain connection to Country. Assessment Task 2 is also very hands-on and requires students to design a resource/learning activity that engages young learners through experiential pedagogy.
