Content

This is the second mathematics unit in a sequence of two, designed to develop preservice teachers’ knowledge and practice as primary mathematics and numeracy educators who know how to build young learners’ fluency, understanding, problem solving and reasoning problem-solving through a combination of underpinning mathematical concepts and skills (numerical, spatial, graphical, statistical, and algebraic); mathematical thinking and strategies; and general thinking skills as appropriate to discipline and discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies . Throughout the unit, preservice teachers develop their ability to evaluate and design high-quality lessons, enact a range of effective and intentional pedagogies, connect mathematics with real-world problems, and use manipulatives, calculators and other digital technologies. Preservice teachers will continue to learn to interact with primary school students and analyse individual and group responses to a range of mathematics learning and assessment tasks to assess curriculum achievement standards and identify future learning needs and targets.
