Content

This unit is designed to prepare pre-service teachers to teach print literacy and early reading in the early years of school (up to approximately age eight), while emphasising the development of research skills as a key dimension of effective  literacy teaching.

This unit draws on evidence-informed research and practices in early print literacy acquisition and reading and focuses on the development and articulation of each preservice teacher's personal theory of literacy teaching and learning, through critical engagement with unit content. Assessments of early print literacy skills are examined and practised, and students consider when and how these might be utilised in educational contexts. Emphasis is given to accessing the professional resources available and how these might support beginning teachers in their daily work. Preservice teachers will utilise these evidence-informed understandings, including knowledge of evidence-based assessment practices to consider when and how teachers make particular pedagogical decisions in early years print literacy teaching.  Understandings from this unit will be contextualised and applied when considering and tailoring literacy learning for diverse young learners in students’ second, and third English and Literacy related units of study in the course.
