Content
This is the second of three units within the Master of Teaching (Primary) degree designed to prepare primary school teachers of literacy and English. This unit builds on the content from The Science of Reading in Primary Education where preservice teachers were introduced to evidence-based research into reading, including oral language development, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension to explore how these factors influence pedagogical decision making in the early years of schooling (Prep-2). Through fieldwork in young learners’ homes and schools, and using theoretical frameworks, students research the needs and potentials of diverse young literacy learners, and contemporary literacy and English teaching practices in the early years of schooling. Students engage with a variety of pedagogical and assessment approaches and consider their practical application in an early years classroom (CC2.3), including the implementation of a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) framework (CC2.6). Reflection on personal learning and critique of current issues associated with the teaching of literacy is a core aspect of the unit.
