Content
This unit is the first unit in your professional studies major sequence. It plays a key role in your teacher preparation and provides an introduction to the nature of education, schools, teaching and learning. As you explore the ideas contained in this unit that you will develop an appreciation of the complex nature of the work that teachers do and the legislation and governance that apply to teachers' work. Who you are as a teacher will be a rich amalgam of who you are as a person and your understandings about your students, your curriculum area and the purposes of education and schooling. This unit includes the foundational module of threshold concepts of classroom management designed to support you with required knowledge and understanding prior to you first professional experience placement. This content will help you as a developing teacher to learn how to develop a positive classroom environment and to utilise proactive practices to set high expectations and prevent misbehaviour.
Unit fee information
Fees and charges vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study and their study discipline, and your study load.
Tuition fees increase at the beginning of each calendar year and all fees quoted are in Australian dollars ($AUD). Tuition fees do not include textbooks, computer equipment or software, other equipment or costs such as mandatory checks, travel and stationery.

Hurdle requirements
Professional Experience Professional Experience for Preservice Teachers enrolled in School of Education courses, the Professional Experience component is assessed primarily by the site-based teacher (Mentor) who advises the Unit Chair. Satisfactory completion of the professional experience placement is required to pass this unit.
Pre-Service Teachers cannot pass this unit without successful completion of the Safer Learners module.
