Study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150-hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

1-day on-campus professional experience (studio workshop) in Orientation Week at Burwood (Melbourne), (date TBA)

1 x 3-hour on-campus seminar per week in non placement weeks

1 x 1-hour online lecture per week in non-placement week for 3 weeks (week TBA) (recordings provided)

1 x 1-hour online lecture (placement preparation) per week (week TBA) (recordings provided)

Non-compulsory online meetings scheduled during placement weeks. Refer to course site for details.

Scheduled learning activities - online:

Placements for this unit are scheduled across multiple placement blocks. Students will be assigned to one of these blocks and cannot choose their preferred placement window. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they are available for placement at any time within the designated placement periods, as scheduling may occur at any point within these timeframes.

Flexibility and full availability during all placement windows is essential for successful allocation and completion of the professional experience.

Please note: Placement periods may take place during or outside standard trimester teaching dates.

Content

This unit introduces the teaching profession and prepares pre-service teachers for their transition from learner to novice teacher. It examines the development of professional identity and philosophy through critical reflection and alignment with the AITSL Graduate Teacher Standards. Students will explore the influence of personal beliefs, values, and experiences on teaching practice, alongside analysis of contemporary issues in education, pedagogical theory, and teacher professionalism. The unit also focuses on ethical and legal responsibilities, the importance of ongoing professional learning, and classroom management strategies to enhance student learning and wellbeing within diverse educational contexts.

Unit fee information

Fees and charges vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study and their study discipline, and your study load.

Tuition fees increase at the beginning of each calendar year and all fees quoted are in Australian dollars ($AUD). Tuition fees do not include textbooks, computer equipment or software, other equipment or costs such as mandatory checks, travel and stationery.

Commonwealth Prac Payment

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is intending to introduce the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) to assist eligible students with costs related to mandatory placements in higher education courses for teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work.

Hurdle requirements

Satisfactory completion of the Professional Experience component in this unit is compulsory in order to fulfil the course requirements and to be eligible to apply for professional registration. Pre-Service Teachers cannot pass this unit without successful completion of the Safer Learners module
