Content

This unit is the second in a sequence of three units designed to prepare pre-service teachers to teach Mathematics in a primary classroom and will focus on how to teach the Mathematics curriculum from Foundation to Year 2. Preservice teachers begin to understand how mathematics and numeracy is learned and therefore taught using effective evidence-based pedagogical practices in the early years of primary school (F-2). With reference to the F-2 Mathematics curriculum, pre-service teachers will learn to how to teach the six strands of mathematics (number, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability) and the four proficiencies (understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning) to a primary class. Mathematical language, modelling, representations, and strategies will be examined as well as the use of manipulatives, calculators, and other digital technologies in primary mathematics classrooms. The unit will also address connections between mathematics and real-world contexts. Preservice teachers will develop and demonstrate the skills necessary to plan for the teaching, learning, assessment and feedback cycle in the F-2 Mathematics classroom.
