Content
This unit develops preservice teachers' knowledge and practice in planning, teaching and assessing primary mathematics and numeracy with a focus on rational number and algebraic thinking in Year 3-6. Preservice teachers will use curriculum resources and apply research insights to plan mathematics instruction for diverse learners. The unit will explore key mathematical concepts, effective pedagogies, mathematical language, models, representations, strategies, and the use of manipulatives, calculators, and digital technologies in primary classrooms. The unit connects curriculum frameworks, teaching for conceptual understanding, and the four proficiencies (understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning). They will engage with evidence-based curriculum resources to plan, organise, and sequence lessons that challenge and engage students. Preservice teachers will develop and demonstrate an understanding of effective planning, incorporating high-quality lessons and inclusive, student-centered strategies. They will evaluate emerging trends in teaching, including explicit numeracy instruction, the progressive removal of scaffolding, and the importance of independent problem-solving. Published teaching and learning resources will be drawn on and critiqued in the planning process.
