Content

The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) training program is delivered by an external provider (Berry Street).

The BSEM is a research-informed, trauma-aware framework designed to enhance student engagement, well-being, and academic success. Completion of this unit is a course requirement for all initial teacher education students. The BSEM provides essential skills in trauma-informed teaching, inclusive learning environments, and student support.

BSEM helps future teachers understand the impact of trauma on learning, create supportive classrooms, strengthen student-teacher relationships, and implement strengths-based practices. The course is structured around five key domains—Body, Relationship, Stamina, Engagement, and Character—each fostering self-regulation, resilience, and motivation. These domains equip student teachers with strategies for stress regulation, relational classroom management, academic persistence, and student engagement to work in diverse settings.

Students who commenced their Initial Teacher Education program from 2026 will need to enrol into this ETI010, and register to complete BSEM. (Fees for the program are included in your student fees).

Students who are interested in completing BSEM and commenced their Initial Teacher Education program prior to 2026, are not required to enrol in ETI010. Instead register directly with BSEM. (Discounted fees for this program are specified on the BSEM registration page).

Please note the BSEM site includes dates, eligibility and more.
