Content
This unit is the second in a sequence of six professional practice units, equipping pre-service teachers with foundational skills in lesson planning and curriculum navigation. Students will learn to develop structured, engaging, and developmentally appropriate lesson plans by referencing key learning objectives from both the Victorian and Australian Curriculum. A key focus is on understanding how physical, social, and intellectual development affects student learning and using the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to guide professional growth.
Through interactive seminars and a 10-day teaching placement, students will practice identifying students’ prior knowledge to effectively introduce new topics and implement formative assessment strategies to monitor learning in real time. They will also explore ways to integrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority into their lesson plans.
Additionally, students will engage in reflective practice, seeking and applying feedback from supervising teachers to refine their planning and instructional techniques. This unit prepares students to confidently design lessons that are aligned with curriculum requirements, informed by assessment, and responsive to diverse learning needs in primary school classrooms.
