Content
In this unit, you will explore the complexities of teaching in diverse primary classrooms and develop strategies to create inclusive and responsive learning environments. You will examine effective teaching approaches that cater to students from varied linguistic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, ensuring that all learners feel valued and supported. Through critical self-inquiry, you will engage with the concept of positionality, reflecting on how your own background, biases, and assumptions influence your teaching practices. The unit will also emphasize ongoing intercultural development, encouraging self-reflection and reflexivity as essential tools for professional growth. You will investigate the cultural diversity present in Australian classrooms and communities, with a particular focus on understanding and valuing the perspectives of EAL/D and First Nations students. Additionally, you will critically analyse how biases impact classroom interactions, behaviours, and learning outcomes, and develop strategies to mitigate these effects. By the end of the unit, pre-service teachers will have developed a foundational understanding about how to create inclusive classrooms.
