Content
This unit equips pre-service teachers with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage families in students’ learning and implement inclusive teaching practices. Students will explore research-based approaches for fostering positive, two-way communication with families to enhance student learning outcomes, particularly for students with additional needs or from disadvantaged backgrounds. The unit will examine practices such as collaborative problem-solving, learning updates, and family-school partnerships to support student success. A strong emphasis is placed on inclusive education and legal obligations, with students developing a comprehensive understanding of Australian and international policies related to the rights of students with disabilities, including the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. Pre-service teachers will also learn to apply differentiated instruction strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of students across all ability levels. Through case studies, policy analysis, and simulated family-school interactions, students will develop practical strategies for creating inclusive, collaborative, and legally compliant learning environments that support all students to thrive.
