Content
This unit is the second of two units within Midwifery Studies: Year 2. Students will be introduced to various aspects of postnatal care for the woman and neonate, providing the opportunity for students to examine the normal maternal physiological changes that occur in the postnatal phase and the adaptations of the neonate, including care of complex neonates on the postnatal ward.
Students will explore strategies inherent to midwifery care that support the health education needs of a woman, such as breastfeeding and alternative infant feeding options, immunisation, infant safety, and the potential emotional changes that may be experienced by the woman in the postnatal period. During an 80-hour Midwifery Practice Experience, students will have the opportunity to further develop mindsets and apply knowledge and skills learned in this unit and previous units.

Commonwealth Prac Payment
From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is intending to introduce the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) to assist eligible students with costs related to mandatory placements in higher education courses for teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work.
