| Study commitment: | Students will spend on average 300 hours over the trimester undertaking synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities for this unit. This will include 32 hours of synchronous learning activities (12 x 2 hour seminars and 4 x 2 hour simulations across the trimester). Students will spend 48 hours undertaking guided asynchronous learning activities. This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site. |

Content
This unit is the first of three units within the Midwifery Studies Year 3. Students are introduced to caring for the woman who experiences complexities in pregnancy, labour and birth and/or postnatal period related to existing or emerging complication or pathology.
Students will extend their understanding of physiological changes that occur across the continuum of care, to inform assessment and midwifery care where the risk of maternal or fetal complications has been identified. The role of collaboration within a multidisciplinary care model will be explored using the Australian College of Midwives' National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral.
