| Study commitment: | Students will spend on average 300 hours over the trimester undertaking synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities for this unit. This will include 28 hours synchronous learning activities and a 160 hour professional experience placement. Students will spend 14 hours undertaking guided asynchronous learning activities. |

Content
This unit is one of two units within the Clinical Studies Cluster: Year 2. The unit aims to provide opportunities for students to develop knowledge and skills related specifically to the assessment and management of patients experiencing acute episodic illness in acute care.
Students will apply an understanding of pathophysiology to select acute illnesses related to hospitalisation. Using the nursing process students will implement strategies to optimise outcomes and minimise the impact of hospitalisation on patients’ functional abilities.
During a four (4) week professional experience placement students will develop mindsets and apply knowledge and skills learned in this unit and previous units.

Commonwealth Prac Payment
From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is intending to introduce the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) to assist eligible students with costs related to mandatory placements in higher education courses for teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work.
Hurdle requirements
- Must pass Pre-placement Assessment - Pass/Fail
- Must pass Professional Experience Placement (PEP) - ungraded pass/ungraded fail
- Must pass Interactive Oral Assessment
Failure of the clinical component will lead to a Fail in this unit and may lead to exclusion.
