Content
A key aim of the unit is to build students' competency in the application of clinical psychology within health and medical practice settings, including rehabilitation from illness and injury. Students will learn to apply advanced psychological knowledge of biopsychosocial models of health in the assessment and treatment of mental health comorbidities related to the impacts of illness, hospitalisation, and medical treatments, and psychological issues related to chronic, sub-acute and acute health conditions such as chronic pain and cancer. Students will further their understanding of the role of health and medical illness in the aetiology, progress and recovery of mental health conditions. The unit will provide an opportunity for students to learn and practice applications of appropriate therapies in the management of, and adjustment to, illness and injury. Students will also develop their knowledge of psychopharmacology and its role in the biopsychosocial treatment of common mental health disorders, whilst also critically examining the role of clinical psychology in medication adherence and other health behaviour change. This will include a focus on the professional identity of clinical psychologists working within multi-disciplinary medical teams and the development of competence in secondary consultation and other critical communication modes relevant to medical and other health settings.
