Content
The Unit Learning Outcomes (ULOs) for Issues in Professional Psychology provide essential preparation for professional practice, which begins in Trimester 2 with the clinical placement Program and then continues throughout graduates' professional careers. The unit develops knowledge, reflective practice, and applied skills relevant to professional practice, with a strong emphasis on the governance frameworks support clinical psychology as a regulated health profession.
During their five-day intensive, students will engage deeply with the application of relevant legal frameworks, mental health practice standards, and codes of conduct and ethical practice relevant to the provision of psychological services. These will include: The Psychology Board of Australia Professional competencies for psychologists, The Psychology Board of Australia Code of Conduct, the AHPRA registration standards and the Australian national practice standards for the mental health workforce.
A highlight of the intensive is the two-day First Nations Australians Cultural Immersion program, which supports students to deepen their understanding of - and commitments to - culturally safe practice when working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Students will engage in foundational learning relating to interprofessional collaboration through four online modules completed at the beginning of the trimester.
Students will also participate in five days of work integrated learning within a public mental health setting. Through this they will critically evaluate the influence of personal values, beliefs and wellbeing on professional practice, reflect on the role of self-care and apply reflective practice to support safe and sustainable care.
