Content

This unit will develop students' awareness of the impact of diversity, social context, and structural inequities when working with clients across a range of service settings. Students will learn to adapt their professional practice to work competently, ethically, culturally responsively, and sensitively with diverse individuals and communities. The unit will also introduce students to health equity approaches in psychological practice, encouraging reflection on barriers to access, systemic disadvantage, and the role of psychologists in promoting inclusive and person-centred care.

A broad interpretation of diversity will be encouraged, including people who may differ from students in relation to age, gender, sex, sexuality, culture, language, race, spirituality, socio-economic status, educational attainment, cognitive capacity, ability, and geographic location. Experts from the field will support students to develop cultural humility, reflective practice, and sensitive curiosity, while introducing frameworks and guidelines for engaging with, assessing, and supporting: forensic clients; people experiencing alcohol and other drug (AOD) concerns; people with cognitive impairment or intellectual disability (ID); LGBTIQA+ and gender diverse people; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. The unit will also provide guidance on identifying and accessing appropriate supports, services, and referral pathways for diverse populations, while emphasising ethical, respectful, and collaborative practice.
