| In-person attendance requirements: | Students will complete 100 hours of placements over the course of this unit, comprised of 40 hours of client contact, 10 hours of supervision, and at 50 hours of non-contact work related to counselling placement. Students will self-source a placement, guided by the School of Psychology - Professional Placement Officer Across both Counselling Placement units 1 and 2, students will complete a combined 200 placement hours (comprising 80 hours client contact, 20 hours clinical supervision, and 100 hours non-client contact work). All placement hours must be completed within Australia, with both the host organisation and student being physically located within Australia. |
| Note: | Students must also have a current police check and Working with Children Check, and be willing to comply with any other requirements of the placement organisation. Should a student have a disclosable outcome/s on their national police check, agencies reserve the right to refuse to provide a placement. If an alternative placement cannot be obtained, the student will be unable to meet the requirements of the placement units and completion of the course will therefore not be possible. |
Content
This unit provides students with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a supported and supervised counselling setting. The unit is designed to enhance students' self-awareness, professionalism, and ethical practice, and to consolidate and integrate learning from previous counselling units. Through the placement experience, students will develop their skills in communication, empathy, active listening, and counselling interventions, and will learn how to tailor these to the unique needs of individual clients. By successfully completing this unit, students will gain valuable experience as well as the opportunity to connect with professionals in the counselling field, which will support them to gain future employment. Students will complete 100 hours of counselling practicum, including 40 hours of client contact, 10 hours of supervision, and 50 hours of non-client contact activities related to counselling*. As part of their placement, students will participate in regular individual and group supervision to support the development of their counselling, ethical and professional skills.

Fees and charges vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study and their study discipline, and your study load.
Tuition fees increase at the beginning of each calendar year and all fees quoted are in Australian dollars ($AUD). Tuition fees do not include textbooks, computer equipment or software, other equipment or costs such as mandatory checks, travel and stationery.

Hurdle requirements
- Students must pass all assessments to pass the unit. A second opportunity will be given to students to enable them to demonstrate competency if they do not pass the first submission.
