Content
Society’s major health and social issues are increasingly recognised as complex problems. This unit will introduce students to the broad field of systems thinking and then focus on one approach called system dynamics, which is commonly used in Australia and internationally to support diverse communities to respond to complex problems. The unit will draw on applied examples across health and society, such as food systems, climate change, mental health, family violence, and social inclusion. The core theories of system dynamics will be presented, followed by applications of system dynamics theory in the field. Students will learn about conventions of system dynamics including causal loop diagrams, reference modes, unintended consequences and other systems thinking tools. These tools, particularly causal loop diagrams, enable people to visually represent the underlying structures that may drive complex problems, providing a valuable platform for shared understanding and action. This approach will develop students’ ability to view problems holistically, build consensus amongst diverse perspectives, and anticipate unintended consequences.
