Content

Technology plays a major role in how people working in health and social systems respond to complex problems. There are increasing opportunities in health and social sectors to collaborate with other sectors to incorporate new insights into complex problems that can be generated from technology. In the past decade, the use of systems science has evolved and become central to efforts that seek to understand and address this complexity. These changes have included evolving methods to simulate the behaviour of health and social systems and represent the key structures driving observed outcomes. Building a simulation model can be a powerful sensemaking tool, challenging key collaborators to consider how change may happen, what is required for that change to happen, and what may be realistic.

Incorporating technology into systems thinking approaches has great promise, but there is also a risk that technology will amplify some of the underlying causes of the very problems that are being addressed, such as discrimination, polarisation, and oppression. Therefore, there is a need for people working in health and social systems to be able to critically engage with technological innovations that intersect with complex problems, recognising where there are opportunities and critiquing and responding to challenges. This unit introduces students to system dynamics simulation modelling as a key form of technology to advance systems thinking. Students will learn what a system dynamics model is, how models are built, and how to interpret outcomes. Students will be equipped with skills to engage with system dynamics modellers as critical partners, leveraging technology to strengthen equity and inclusion in health and social systems.
