Content
This unit examines how governments, societies and advocates can respond to the structural determinants of health which manifest through a series of intersecting major global and social crises. Globally and nationally, we face challenges of food and nutritional security, climate change and environmental breakdown, widening social inequality, and health security threats in the form of pandemics and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases. The unit traces the impacts of these crises on human and planetary health and considers how they might be addressed, both individually and collectively, through available pathways for transformation.
The unit begins by introducing a range of interventions, including public health policy, law and regulation. These approaches help to prevent and mitigate negative health and environmental outcomes, and are explored through case studies such as tobacco control, drawing on disciplinary approaches from public health, law, economics and public policy. The unit then turns to examine broader transformative and holistic agendas for change, in which human and planetary health are understood as contingent on wider transformations to the global political economy. Students will examine established frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals, alongside other more radical alternatives including Green Growth, Post-Growth agendas and Indigenous frameworks. The unit aims to provide students with a clear understanding that numerous substantive policy options are presently available to advance health equity and a sustainable approach to our collective futures.
