Content
This unit is designed for students who wish to expand their knowledge of therapeutic medical play to support children, adolescence, and families in health/educational and/or community settings.
The therapeutic powers of play are explored and integrated with bio-psycho-social theories that inform therapeutic medical play. They will consider the psychosocial impacts on children and adolescents in relation to medical conditions, illnesses, diseases, injuries, and trauma. Students will learn how to developmentally sequence and enhance play based communication when words alone are insufficient. As well as this, students consider how to simplify medical language and translate scientific knowledge to ensure child and family centred care.
Students will be introduced to a range of therapeutic medical play strategies and creative arts-based approaches to help children and adolescents make sense of their health experiences. Case scenarios will be integrated to simulate medical play assessments and therapeutic techniques.
