A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for practice education based on the student’s police record check.

In accordance with the Department of Justice 2007, Working with Children Act 2005, (amended 2017) and Deakin Procedures, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course and ensure it remains current throughout the course.

Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of their professional practice education experience will not be able to undertake their professional practice education experience and this will impede their progress in the course.

Students may also be required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their professional practice education experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for their professional practice education experience if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.

Content

In this unit, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in professional practice and effective team-based collaborative healthcare. Students will take part in various professional practice-related learning experiences, including both simulated scenarios and real-world applications. Linking to the Faculty of Health’s Collaborative Practice Curriculum, students will participate in facilitated simulated interprofessional teams to learn with, from, and about each other, while working on the assessment and management of health problems experienced by simulated people accessing occupational therapy. Using online team meetings, student teams will develop relevant team documents for complex scenarios. In addition, students will prepare for, participate in and be assessed during a professional practice education experience (placement) with a clinical occupational therapy focus.
