Content
Students will undertake the first of four supervised placements in a professional setting. They will have the opportunity to apply learning and to develop their Professional conduct, Reflective practice and Speech pathology practice as outlined in the Professional Standards for Speech Pathologists in Australia. Students are expected to engage with speech pathology practice through observation, questioning, and implementing foundational skills in working with clients, families and communities. Students will demonstrate communication and interaction skills to evaluate client needs and provide speech pathology services with high levels of scaffolding and support from a Clinical Educator. Emphasis is placed on learning within the placement, from speech pathologists and other professionals, and from peers, clients and families.
Unit learning environment:
Students will participate in a supervised professional placement of 18 days, situated within a speech pathology service. Students will be allocated to their placement by the University. Students will have a Clinical Educator (a qualified speech pathologist) on-site to support and scaffold their learning experiences. Expectations of students on placement and University supports for students are outlined in the Speech Pathology Placements Hub.
On-campus lectures are considered part of the placement experience and attendance at these is mandatory. Online seminars from week 6 will support students to share, reflect on and integrate their learning and attendance is strongly recommended.
Students should expect to travel to placement as outlined in the Speech Pathology Placements Hub. It is also likely that you will have to attend at least one rural placement during the course.
