Assumed knowledge:

Students are expected to familiarise themselves with the Speech Pathology Placement Handbook, along with any additional information provided about their allocated placement, prior to attending their placement.

Study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the trimester undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.
Scheduled learning activities - campus:

3 x 2 hour on-campus lectures during weeks 5, 6 and 8
3 x 1 hour online seminars during placement period
1 x 20 day on-site professional experience (placement) from week 10.

Note that placements and assessment for this unit extend beyond the teaching trimester period.
In-person attendance requirements:

Students are required to attend on campus lectures and all placement days.

Students must communicate directly with Clinical Educators regarding attendance as outlined in the Speech Pathology Placements Hub.

Assessment task 3 requires in-person attendance by students. The date and time that students are required to attend will be communicated to them in advance of the assessment.

Content

Students will undertake the second of four supervised placements in a professional setting. They will have the opportunity to apply learning and continue to develop and evidence their Professional conduct, Reflective practice and Speech pathology practice as outlined in the Professional Standards for Speech Pathologists in Australia. Students are expected to engage with speech pathology practice through active participation, beginning to take on responsibility, and implementing communication and interaction skills to work with clients, families and communities. Students will demonstrate speech pathology practice, which includes evaluating client needs, providing speech pathology services and developing rationales for their decisions, with moderate levels of scaffolding and support from a Clinical Educator. Emphasis is placed on learning within the placement, from speech pathologists and other professionals, and from peers, clients and families.
