| Study commitment: | Students will on average spend 500 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit. |
| Scheduled learning activities - online: | A minimum of 500 hours (across at least 63 days) of professional experience (field education), as per AASW accreditation requirements, in a social or community service agency or program. All students must attend and participate in a compulsory 3 day placement preparation seminar at the Geelong Waterfront campus in Week 8 of Trimester 1 of the year placement is to be undertaken. Students must attend integration seminars (online) during placement. Time for personal study and completion of some assessment items will be required outside of placement hours. Students are also required to participate in online independent and collaborative learning activities. |

Content
This unit provides a research-focused professional practice placement for Master of Social Work students who are completing the Research Pathway. Students will undertake supervised social work practice while integrating research-informed inquiry, critical reflection and professional decision-making in field education.
The unit emphasises ethical and culturally responsive practice, effective communication, use of supervision, and the application of research skills to practice-based questions and service contexts. It is designed to ensure that students in the Research Pathway continue to meet professional placement expectations while also building capability for future research and higher degree study.
Unit fee information
Fees and charges vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study and their study discipline, and your study load.
Tuition fees increase at the beginning of each calendar year and all fees quoted are in Australian dollars ($AUD). Tuition fees do not include textbooks, computer equipment or software, other equipment or costs such as mandatory checks, travel and stationery.

Commonwealth Prac Payment
From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government is intending to introduce the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) to assist eligible students with costs related to mandatory placements in higher education courses for teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work.
Hurdle requirements
- All students are required to submit the following documents onto the InPlace system by Friday of Week 4, Trimester 1 of the year when placement is to be undertaken :
- Current Working with Children Check (or equivalent)
- Current NDIS Check
- Completed Vaccinations form
On campus students at Waterfront campus are required to attend a minimum of 9 out of the 11 scheduled weekly classes in Trimester 1 of the year placement is to be undertaken.
Online students are required to attend a 3 day pre-placement intensive held in Week 8, Trimester 1 of the year when placement is to be undertaken.
