Content
This unit examines how nations and economies gain from international trade and the reasons why they may be reluctant to pursue free trade at times. It covers topics such as factors determining international trade flows, trade policies, and the economics of fragmentation and global supply chains, including the organisation of production across global value chains. The unit also introduces trade analytics, providing tools to analyse trade data and patterns, as well as contemporary issues such as trade and industrial policy, trade wars, and geopolitical tensions. It further explores regional trade integration and Australia’s role in the global and Asia-Pacific trading system, alongside international organisations such as GATT/WTO and trade-related international finance. A range of analytical techniques will be developed, with the unit emphasising applied economic analysis to evaluate real-world issues in trade, protectionism, and globalisation. Upon completion, students will understand how trade benefits economies and businesses, and the policies and decision-making processes that support stable trading relationships and well-functioning global supply chains.
