Content
The capability to manage data and information is fundamental to any organisation. An information systems graduate should have good knowledge of the techniques to query large databases and analyse business needs to design a structured database. The unit uses familiar applications (eg Facebook, Amazon and Google to illustrate the importance of structured databases. Big data in the context of structured, semi-structured and unstructured data is also discussed. The importance of data quality is discussed in the context of the DAMA wheel. Principles of information asset management is also covered with a focus on data and information governance in an era of increasing data monetisation. Students will perform basic Structured Query Language (SQL) queries and develop the ability to design and develop a comprehensive EER data model based on analysis of an organisation’s information needs, and allow for the informed selection of a comprehensive information asset management approach.
