Content
This unit, Cybercrime, explores the complex intersections of criminal law and digital technologies. Weekly content focuses on prevalent technology-facilitated crimes perpetrated against adults and children, including surveillance (public and private), cyberbullying, image-based sexual abuse, identity theft and online banking fraud, and how law enforcement agencies are using digital technologies in investigations. Students will be equipped with knowledge of Victorian and Commonwealth cybercrime laws, and critically analyse the many challenges that lawyers face in attempting to develop and enforce criminal laws in the digital age, including constant technological advancements, the extraterritorial application of laws and the dynamic ways that cybercriminals adapt their behaviours. Drawing on socio-legal theories and practice, and highly topical, real-world case studies, students will refine their skills in legal problem-solving, critiquing regulatory approaches and critically evaluating the implications of digital technologies for the administration of justice more broadly.
