Content
Small Business Management is a practice-based unit designed to equip students with the entrepreneurial knowledge and practical skills required to buy, operate, and eventually exit a small business in the Australian context. Students will explore the entire lifecycle of small business ownership—from identifying acquisition opportunities and conducting due diligence to managing operations, enhancing business performance, and planning a strategic exit.
Through simulated real-world scenarios, interactive activities, and engagement with guest experts, students will gain working knowledge of key legal, financial, marketing, and operational factors critical to small business success. They will also apply digital tools widely used in small business environments and build transferable capabilities in communication, teamwork, and resilience.
This unit aligns with ASIC and CPA Australia guidelines on SME literacy and supports Deakin’s experiential learning approach through hands-on toolkits, group projects, and reflective practice.
