Content
Incubator Management is the capstone unit of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation major, designed for students to actively develop their own startup ventures. In this highly practical, mentor-supported unit, undergraduate and graduate student teams work through a structured, outcome-driven accelerator process that mirrors real-world incubator programs.
Over the course of the trimester, students explore a central business hypothesis and iterate on their venture through customer validation, product refinement, financial modelling, and investor engagement. Each team is guided by experienced mentors and industry advisors and receives ongoing feedback from peers and faculty.
The unit culminates in Decision Day, where teams—equipped with data, market insights, and mentor input— must critically evaluate their progress and decide whether to accelerate, pivot, or shut down their venture.
Top-performing teams may be selected to represent Deakin in the prestigious University of Texas at Dallas 'Big Idea Competition', offering international exposure and further venture development opportunities. This unit prepares students for real-world entrepreneurship, instilling resilience, adaptability, and a deep understanding of what it takes to bring a startup to life—or responsibly step away.
