Content
This unit introduces you to the evolving role of business in society, with a focus on how organisations can be part of the solution to today’s ethical, environmental, and social challenges. You will explore how businesses create value beyond profit by embedding ethical decision-making, environmental sustainability, and socially responsible practices into their core strategies. Key themes include business ethics, environmental and social sustainability, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) frameworks.
You will critically examine the responsibilities that businesses have toward different stakeholders, including communities, workers, investors, and the planet, through a range of commercial discipline lenses. By exploring values driven approaches from multiple disciplinary angles, you’ll learn how different functions within a business can contribute to ethical and sustainable practices.
Through real-world case studies, individual reflections, and group-based problem solving, you will assess the trade-offs, tensions and ethical dilemmas that arise when balancing short-term goals with long-term societal impact. By the end of the unit, you will be better equipped to evaluate the ethical and strategic dimensions of business decisions and propose solutions that support a more equitable and sustainable future while also developing foundational skills that will support your success across your degree program.
