Content
SEE419 aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge about the design, integration and management of microgrid systems. A microgrid is a small-scale power grid that can operate independently or be integrated into a national grid. With the recent increase in distributed and renewable energy resources increasing remote or isolated loads, a customised microgrid solution is required. In this essence, students will learn about the structure, type and resources required to design and operate a microgrid and still maintain standard power quality with increasing penetration of renewable energy. They will develop hands-on experiences in integrating renewable energy systems such as solar and wind in a microgrid and design power electronic converters to manage the outputs of the renewable energy sources. Students will investigate the operation of microgrids in grid-connected and islanded modes. Students will also develop power management as well as protection strategies for microgrid and analyse the system.
