4 x 2 hour practical experience (laboratories) per trimester, 1 x 2 hour seminar per week, 1 x 2 hour practical experience (studio) per week.

Scheduled learning activities - online:

Online independent and collaborative learning including 1 x 2 hour seminar per week, 1 x 2 hour practical experience (studio) per week. Students are required to attend and participate in 8 hours of practical activities at the Waurn Ponds (Geelong) Campus during the trimester intensive activities (typically week 8) as detailed in the unit site.

Content

This unit introduces students to various types of materials that are typically used in wide ranging engineering applications. Initially, emphasis will be on gaining fundamental knowledge related to material science and basic chemistry. Students will learn about states of matter, chemical bonding and molecular structures, and how this relates to mechanical properties that are important in engineering design. Further, they will learn about environmentally-driven chemical processes affecting material performance, as well as the impact different materials have on the sustainability of engineering projects, emphasising their whole-of-life impacts and embodied environmental value. Bringing this together, students will gain knowledge on structural engineering design principles, including loading, and stress calculation techniques, and will learn how to address these stresses by selecting suitable materials and typical structural shapes to attain the optimum design and net sustainability benefits.

Students shall be individually assessed on their performance through quizzes and design reports. Team participation performance shall be assessed via group work, such as practicals, peer assessments and an oral presentation.
