Study commitment:

Students will on average spend 300 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Scheduled learning activities - campus:

1 x 1 hour seminar per week, 1 x 2 hour practical experience (studio) per week. Students are required to attend and participate in a town hall meeting during the trimester.

Scheduled learning activities - online:

Online independent and collaborative learning including 1 x 1 hour seminar per week, 1 x 2 hour practical experience (studio) per week. Students are required to attend and participate in a town hall meeting (either in person at the Waurn Ponds campus, Burwood campus, or live, online, via Zoom) and for the scheduled sessions at the Waurn Ponds campus during the trimester intensive activities (typically week 7) as detailed in the unit site.

Content

This unit has been developed to familiarise students with the intersection between the environment, engineering, and human health through real-world engineering projects. Students will explore the physical and chemical processes underpinning engineering methods and technologies for water treatment, contaminated land and water remediation, and the generation of energy from renewable and non-renewable sources.
A central focus of the unit is sustainability, approached through the lens of environmental, social, and economic interdependencies within remote communities. This context presents a distinct challenge compared to typical engineering applications in urban and industrial environments, requiring students to adapt their knowledge to settings where infrastructure and resources are limited while satisfying the needs of the community and considering socio-economic and cultural factors.
Students completing this unit gain a solid grounding in the relevant scientific and engineering content as well as professional skills because the emphasis is placed on the process of developing and communicating solutions, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary thinking, stakeholder engagement, and ethical considerations in sustainable development.
