Content
A key contemporary architectural challenge is to address the complex relationship between urban density and liveability by reimagining high-rise structures as a hybridised type. In response to the layered contexts of our cities, architects must integrate diverse programs that promote spatial diversity, social interaction, and adaptability. This involves engaging with verticality not merely as an exercise in height, but as an opportunity to articulate spatial relationships, public-private transitions, and programmatic interdependencies. Hybridity introduces a productive tension between contrasting functions—residential, public, commercial, communal—within a single architectural structure, requiring a mediated design process. Hybridscapes will support students in exploring architectural design through the lens of complex, contradictory, and hybrid environments in which contemporary architecture operates. Through a series of learning and assessment activities, students will investigate the impact of dense architectural solutions in urban contexts, with a particular focus on understanding 'vertical' relationships and spatial arrangements within high-rise building types.
