Content
Architecture is a material practice. Buildings are made artefacts, and the tectonics of their construction profoundly affects the qualities of space that users experience, it can significantly impact the environment, and fundamentally change a place. The responsibility of architects is to take care in their acts of making, from a considered use of resources, to a conscientious provision for users and community, to a Care for Country which learns from the knowledges and practices of its First Peoples.
The existing built edifice must be understood as a primary resource, which represents a significant carbon investment, and affords opportunities to continue to provide utility beyond that for which it was originally commissioned. A successful adaptive reuse project establishes a meaningful conversation with that which is already there, and the introduction of new elements to ensure it serves its future.
This Unit continues the formation of a Common Ground, established in the first part of this two-trimester project, exploring how the tectonic, spatial, contextual, and cultural development and resolution of an adaptive reuse project can provide a model for how the profession can responsibly deliver the new buildings we need with only the resources we can afford.

Hurdle requirements
To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must achieve a minimum of 50% in AT2 Project process, resolution, and presentation, in addition to the normal requirement of at least 50% overall for the unit.
