Content
Architecture is a discipline which can be practised in a myriad of ways. As a profession we are situated in the moving present, looking back and learning from our pasts, dreaming of the future. We each perform the prophetic act of architectural design in a way that reflects our individual positions, our own lived experience and prior learnings. The practise of architectural design can be one of making new knowledge, brings new understandings to our discipline. Practice-based or design-led research employs creative, iterative, and reflective methodologies, building upon existing contexts and fields, drawing connections between the complexity and variety in the world, and the possible futures that continue to evolve that world.
This unit is the first part of your final design project in architecture school – the Architectural Design Thesis project asks you to establish your individual design position, contextualised within the larger discipline of architecture. In this first part, you will be asked to undertake rigorous, meaningful, and critical research and analysis of relevant precedents, of a site or sites, and of the wider contextual and historical issues needed to form a strong foundation for your Thesis project. You will prepare a strategic proposal that you can develop and resolve in Architectural Design Thesis Part 2.
