The Hon Jeff Kennett AC will deliver this year's David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change.

How can professional sportspeople balance elite sporting demands with their own physical and mental health needs?  What role do they play in influencing the wider public?

The Hon Jeff Kennett AC - one of Australia's most recognisable public figures - will discuss these issues at the 2015 Deakin University David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change, which is to be held at Deakin Edge, Federation Square on 1 July.

At this year's oration, entitled 'Professionalism of sport – a threat to good health,' Mr Kennett will reflect on his work with beyondblue and address the impact that sport and sporting figures can play in raising awareness of depression and anxiety. He will share his experiences, challenges and triumphs in educating Australians on mental health.

Following his political career, which culminated in the office of Victorian Premier for eight years, Mr Kennett has continued to influence the nation, particularly in the realms of sport and mental health.

As President of the Hawthorn Football Club (2005-2011), he led the team to their first Premiership in 16 years and, as founding Chairman of beyondblue, he continues to kick goals in raising public awareness to change the attitudes of the wider community towards mental health.

The distinguished annual David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change is a free public event that looks to promote the advancement of public knowledge by exploring the challenges and opportunities for sport to act as a driver of social change.

The Oration honours the significant contribution of David Parkin OAM to Australian society in sport, leadership and education. Dr Parkin OAM is a football legend and great advocate for leadership. A sports industry mentor, he highlights and drives transferable sporting leadership skills into the corporate sector and everyday life. He is renowned for the development of Deakin's Sport Coaching course, the first of its kind in Australia, affirming his commitment to sport and education.

The David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change was established by the Deakin University Council in 2012 as a public lecture to be delivered annually by an eminent person within the industry. Past orators include Mr Andrew Demetriou (2013) and Mr Kevin Sheedy AM (2014).
