James Coulson studied architecture at Deakin University from 1976 to 1981. During the course James pursued diverse interests, including employment in the school as a graphic designer for off-campus teaching. This led to further graphic work for the National Trust and for a book on the traditional Malay house. James also represented the school at the RAIA National Student Workshop on solar energy and again as a measured drawing assistant to archaeologists Dr. George Michel and Dr. Pierre Filleozat at Vijayanagara, India.
After graduation, James worked in several small to medium-sized practices in Geelong, Queensland, Melbourne, London and Ocean Grove. As a project architect he gained broad experience in the process from conception to occupation of a wide range of building typologies in both regional and urban contexts.<br>In the UK, James indulged his particular interest in Arts and Crafts architecture and this influence pervades his holistic approach to balancing humanist and environmental imperatives in architecture. These inform sound architectural decisions in response to major global issues through to the finest detail of making architecture.
James rejoined Deakin as a part-time lecturer whilst building his own house. In 1993 he assumed a full-time role and continues to teach across the design, technology, management and communication disciplines in first to fifth year units.
James' research is currently focussed on the underlying structure of architectural information and maintaining rigor in the relationship between project information and architectural knowledge. His next house is in the design stage.
