Meet the Head of the School of Architecture and Built Environment
"The built environment shapes almost everything about how we live – yet the professions that create it too often work apart from one another." Professor Tuba Kocaturk, Head of the School of Architecture and Built Environment, sees the School's task as closing that gap: drawing design, delivery and system intelligence into more collaborative ways of learning and working, so that our graduates can meet the real complexity of contemporary cities rather than just a part of it.
Trained and practised as an architect, and holding a PhD at the intersection of architecture, engineering and design informatics, Professor Kocaturk has long worked alongside engineers, manufacturers, technology developers and material scientists, on questions no single discipline can answer alone. As Founding Director of the Mediated Intelligence in Design Lab (MInD Lab), she continues to explore how design intelligence can reshape the way buildings and cities are imagined, delivered and lived in.
We must bring circularity lens into the reframing of buildings, neighbourhoods and cities, as living urban systems, with a purpose beyond themselves. We aim to prepare our graduates not only to build well, but to build responsibly, for the systems and communities they serve.
