Before you graduate the University requires all Bachelor of Engineering students to have a minimum of 12 weeks (the equivalent of 60 full working days) of RELEVANT practical experience during your engineering program. For Bachelor of Technology students, at least 8 weeks (the equivalent of 40 full working days) of RELEVANT practical experience is required. As this requirement only came back in force in 2005, those students who enrolled in their current program prior to 2005 are exempt from this requirement.
Engineers Australia suggests that BE students should complete this requirement in the summer vacations between years 2 and 3 and years 3 and 4. Alternatively 12 weeks between years 3 and 4 is acceptable. Many companies prefer to offer work experience immediately prior to your capstone year to check your suitability for a possible career with them after graduation. However as the objective is to enable you to relate your academic studies to experience, earlier work experience is preferred.
