India's first international branch campus
Deakin University is the first international university in the world to open a teaching campus in India. Deakin is partnering with the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to establish its first international branch campus in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). GIFT City is a central business precinct in the Gandhinagar district in Gujarat, India. It is India's first operational greenfield smart city and is set to become a global financial and information technology hub. Learning from industry partners, Deakin's graduates will be prepared for emerging and in-demand roles in India's growth sectors.
Deakin in India
Deakin has a long and rich relationship with India as the first foreign university to establish operations in India in 1994. Over almost three decades, we have developed strategic partnerships with India’s premier research organisations, businesses and academic institutions. Our proud engagement with India continues to this day.
A sustainable future
Deakin is committed to integrating sustainability through our education, campus operations and research. The University’s sustainability commitments will continue to be reflected in our operations around the world – we're committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2025 through renewable energy.
Student life at Deakin’s GIFT City Campus
As with all Deakin campuses, the Deakin University GIFT City Campus will provide a welcoming and safe teaching and learning environment with accessible facilities that are shaped to create the best student experience.
GIFT City Campus will offer future-ready Deakin postgraduate courses aligned with local employment needs. Students will receive the same standard of higher education in GIFT City as in Australia, with academic standards aligned with Australia’s national accreditation body, the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).
Campus to open in 2024
Construction is currently underway and the campus will open for industry engagement and teaching activity in early 2024, the same year Deakin celebrates its 50th anniversary and 30 years in India. GIFT City is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Gujarat, about 12 kilometres from Ahmedabad and eight kilometres from Gandhinagar. The city has cutting-edge infrastructure and facilities, including a multi-modal transportation hub.
